🏅 A Historic Day at Branch 256
Joann Walton Awarded the Meritorious Service Medal
On Sunday, June 28, 2026, members and guests gathered at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 256 Mount Benson to celebrate a truly historic occasion as our Veteran Service Officer, Joann Walton, was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM)—the highest honour bestowed by The Royal Canadian Legion.
This marks the first time in the 68-year history of Branch 256 that one of our members has received this prestigious distinction.
The Legion’s Highest Honour
The Meritorious Service Medal recognizes exceptional dedication, leadership, and service that extends well beyond the ordinary expectations of volunteerism. Reserved for only the most distinguished members of The Royal Canadian Legion, it honours individuals whose commitment has made a lasting difference to veterans, the Legion, and their communities.
Receiving this honour during the Centenary Year of The Royal Canadian Legion made the occasion especially meaningful for both Joann and Branch 256.
A Memorable Ceremony
As is Legion tradition, the meeting began with the Marching of the Colours, the singing of O Canada, prayer, and the formal business of the Branch before members gathered to recognize Joann’s remarkable service.
The Medal was presented by Gary Peters, First Vice President of the BC/Yukon Command of The Royal Canadian Legion, with Sergeant-at-Arms, Lew Forth standing in attendance as part of the ceremony.
Joann also received congratulatory remarks and recognition from:
- Mayor Leonard Krog
- MLA Sheila Malcolmson
- MLA George Anderson
- Member of Parliament Tamara Kronis
each acknowledging her outstanding service to veterans, the Legion, and our community.
A Lifetime of Service
As Branch 256’s Veteran Service Officer, Joann has dedicated countless hours to assisting veterans, their families, and fellow members with compassion, dignity, and unwavering commitment.
Her leadership, kindness, and selfless service have touched countless lives and exemplify the very best of The Royal Canadian Legion.
