REPORTING FOR DUTY

Padre Deb Hinksman Takes Her Post at the Branch

When Reverend Deb Hinksman walked into our Legion branch to sign up for a membership, she wasn’t expecting to leave with a new job. But as the conversation turned to the need for a Branch Padre, she felt a familiar tug. After 45 years of ministering, she recognized a new path when it appeared. Now at almost 71 and semi-retired, “Rev Deb” (as she likes to be called) has stepped up to serve our members, with a personal goal of reaching a “nice round” 50 years of service.

Here for You: Support on the Front Lines

While she provides spiritual guidance and prayer at our meetings and memorials, Rev Deb wants members to know she is available for so much more. Whether you are a Veteran, a First Responder, or a member-at-large, she is here if you are suffering from illness, grief, loss, or mental health struggles. She is ready to visit you in the hospital or offer a compassionate ear without judgement.

As a self-described “non-finger-wagger,” her philosophy is simple: she is not here to convert anyone, but to assist. “I have a sensitivity to know everyone sees faith differently,” she says. As a progressive, “theologically liberal”, Deb accepts people exactly as they are and believes strongly in meeting individuals with compassion, respect, and without judgement.  She jokes that as long as a congregation is open to her doing “unique things,” she’ll keep going—but if the joy disappears, she’ll know it’s time to move on.

A Foundation of Faith and Honesty

Deb’s journey began in the Baptist church, but in grade five, her family moved and began attending the United Church. When she asked her father why they switched, he gave her a refreshingly honest answer: “Because the United Church doesn’t frown on me taking a drink.” While Deb didn’t necessarily see that as a theological reason, she appreciated the honesty—a trait she carries into her own ministry today.

Even as a child, Deb was a faithful attendee, often walking herself to Sunday service even if her family wasn’t going. However, her original dream wasn’t the pulpit—it was the classroom. She wanted to teach Kindergarten.

A Change of Heart in Japan

The turning point came on her 21st birthday during a youth exchange to Japan. Reflecting on her faith alongside other young people, she realized her own beliefs could go much deeper. Upon returning, she began giving speaking engagements and slide shows for the United and Anglican Church women’s groups.

While completing her BA at McMaster University in Hamilton, she was asked to give a sermon in her hometown. The reception was so warm that a local lady suggested she should be a minister. Deb wasn’t convinced until her applications to teacher’s college and social work school were both declined. That was her “lightbulb” moment: “I wonder if I’m supposed to be a minister?”

Breaking New Ground and Military Ties

At the time, female ministers were rare. Undeterred, Deb studied at Emmanuel College and the Centre for Christian Studies in Toronto. Her career took her from Southern Ontario to Vernon, BC, and eventually to Nanaimo six years ago to be near where her husband, Mike, was born and raised.

Her military ties are deep-rooted. With two grandfathers and an uncle who served, the value of remembrance was instilled in her early. In fact, her mother’s birthday fell on November 11th, but in their house, Remembrance Day ceremonies always came before birthday celebrations. Having led Cenotaph ceremonies for 45 years, serving the Legion comes naturally to her.

A Timely Connection

The timing of Rev Deb joining our branch is symbolic: the United Church celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2025, just as our Legion marks its centenary in 2026. Currently, Rev Deb works three-quarter time at Ladysmith First United Church, which keeps her busy with Sunday services and seasons like Easter, but she is dedicated to balancing that role with her volunteer work here at the Branch.
